Building Bridges: Moving Research to Practice

Clinicians are often challenged to make changes in clinical practice based on research evidence. Even when clear evidence-based guidelines are available, clinicians often face multiple challenges with practice change. In this two-part webinar, we will discuss current knowledge of effectiveness of knowledge translation activities and the use of a practical framework for implementing practice change that can be used within health care organizations. 

In the first webinar we will provide an overview of some of the challenges of moving research into practice and introduce the National Implementation Research Network active implementation frameworks (Fixsen et al., 2005). 

In the second webinar we will provide examples of how the frameworks have been used to improve clinical practice in Pediatrics at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital.

Cyndie Koning, PhD, OT (C) divides her time between roles as the Knowledge Mobilization Specialist for the Canadian Spinal Cord Injury Knowledge Mobilization Network and the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital Healthcare Improvement Team. She completed her PhD in Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Alberta. She has spent more than 20 years as an occupational therapist in adolescent psychiatry and assessment/diagnostic clinics in developmental paediatrics. For the past 5 years, her work has become increasingly focused on healthcare improvement initiatives and knowledge mobilization. Her current interests are in using implementation science to move research into practice, developing implementation models for diagnosis and health service provision for children and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder, enhancing patient and family engagement, and standardized clinical practice using evidence-based guidelines.

Laura Mumme is a Knowledge Mobilization Consultant at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta. She is a member of the Glenrose Healthcare Improvement team which supports evidence based clinical practice across the site through an integrated approach to research, outcomes evaluation, knowledge mobilization and quality improvement. She specializes in the clinical application of the National Implementation Research Network active implementation science frameworks, which is a systematic approach to implementation. Currently she supports over 16 Glenrose implementation teams to implement evidence-based practice, increase implementation science knowledge, and improve patient outcomes. Outside of work, you can find Laura at the pool either swimming, coaching or judging synchronized swimming.

Dr.LesleyWiartPTPhD.pngDr. Lesley Wiart PT, PhD

Dr. Lesley Wiart is a pediatric physical therapist who current works as Clinical Outcomes Site Lead at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital and Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy in the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Alberta. Her research interests are focused on evaluation of pediatric rehabilitation interventions and service delivery, particularly related to community participation and inclusion, how family experiences can inform the design, delivery and evaluation of rehabilitation services, and goal setting processes. She is particularly interested in facilitating the use of research evidence and patient and family experience for improving service quality.
